Mario Diaz-Balart: Cuban-American Assuager-In-Charge
12/20/2011

South Florida Republican Congressman and resident pinhead, Mario Diaz-Balart, who was elected into Congress by holding onto the coattails of his brother, has released a statement calling President Obama the "appeaser-in-chief." He does this because Congress removed Diaz-Balart's amendment from the 2012 Appropriations bill that would have reinstated Bush-era travel and remittance restrictions to Cuba. Nevermind that Diaz-Balart's fellow congressmen, not Obama, stripped Diaz-Balart's amendment from the bill because when you have been inflicted with Obama Derangement Syndrome, like Mario, everything is the Black Fidel Castro's fault.

While it's not surprising that a Cuban-American hardliner like Diaz-Balart would be upset about the removal of such language, especially when they've proposed it, what is a bit surprising is that they would vote for the bill anyway. Which is exactly what Diaz-Balart did. Yep, joined hands with fellow South Florida Democrat Debbie Wasserman Shultz and voted "yea."

Sorta like saying how much you hate a certain restaurant and then going there for Sunday Brunch.

That's some outrage, Mario.

In fact, I'm thinking he's earned the new title, "Cuban-American Assuager-in-Charge."

Make sure you make a sign and wear it around your neck the next time you visit the Versailles,  Mario.

A- Sun-Sentinel: It could be a pain in the arse but it pays pretty good.
Help wanted. Hours flexible, pay good. Those with a morbid fear of doctors need not apply.

For years, local medical schools have relied on teams of so-called professional patients to help train medical students in patient interactions and clinical skills.

[...]

Most medical schools pay anywhere from $15 to $25 per hour, said Dr. Alex Mechaber, senior associate dean for undergraduate medical education at University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine.

But the more lucrative pay goes to the patients who teach the more sensitive male and female genital and breast exams.

Why the extra pay?

Because these professional patients are specially trained and the exams are more invasive, Mechaber said.
B- Palm Beach Post: Life in South Florida.
On Sept. 30, the group of 16 aliens traveled from Cali, Colombia to Miami International Airport pretending to be a cheerleading team attending a competition in South Florida. The group also used fraudulent documents to illegally enter the country, Yglesias said.

"They basically came in and they lied [posing] as cheerleaders," he said. "They abscond, they become visa overstays and they never leave the country."

The investigation into the possibility of human smuggling was initiated in Bogota, Colombia by the U.S. Homeland Security Investigations division in Miami. They learned of an organization involved in the smuggling of Colombian nationals into the U.S. through various methods and locations, agents said.
C- Palm Beach Post: Worth Ave. restaurant has been around for 70 years.
If Ta-boó’s walls could talk, what stories they could tell – 70 years’ worth, this week.

Stories about Joseph P. Kennedy and Gloria Swanson in the ladies’ room of the Worth Avenue bistro. Or John F. Kennedy sneaking out the back door – and away from the Secret Service.

Tales tinged with what author and lunchtime regular James Patterson recently described as “a delicious hint of rumor and scandal.”

“It has so much history to it,” says Nancy Sharigan, who’s owned the restaurant since 1990 with business partner Franklyn deMarco. “You run into people all over the country and they’ll say, ‘I went there with my grandmother’ or ‘I met my husband there.’ “
D- CBS4: Miami Beach's Coral House getting a makeover.
MIAMI BEACH (CBS4)- It’s a rare landmark home in Miami Beach, and now it’s getting a new look.

Only the shell of the coral rock home remains at 900 Collins Avenue. But it was once almost totally demolished. Now the Miami Beach Historic Preservation Board has approved a design to restore the property.
E- WSVN: Stupid criminals.
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police are searching for a crook who broke into a school but suffered a major injury during the attempted robbery.

Surveillance cameras were rolling as the masked bandit broke into Charles Wyche Elementary School in Miami Gardens, early last Friday.

According to police, the suspect, who was wearing a black ski mask over his face, was trying to steal copper wires from the school. The burglar was equipped with ropes and bolt cutters to aid in the theft.

Surveillance video showed that something went horribly wrong during the burglary. Miami-Dade Schools Police Chief Charles Hurley said, "The subject is on the second story of this elementary school, presumably to steal copper, which is a national problem going on. Boom! You can see the subject just fell from the second story to the first story, tremendous impact."

The suspect can be seen writhing in pain. He tried to walk out of the school, but he fell after he put weight on his injured leg. "He's figuring out what he's going to do. He takes off his ski mask, so he did try to hide his identity," said Hurley. "Now, he's going to try to make it to his feet. He gets to his feet only to fall back down again because of the injury, and then, he low crawls out of the school."

3. Newt has a “woman problem” … and an arrogance problem — and no, it’s not the fact of third wife/former mistress Calista. Newt’s condescending response to Michele Bachmann’s quite effective attacks on him on Thursday could come back to haunt him, since Iowa women GOPers may be among those checking out the Youtube clips tomorrow. And the clip of that exchange will be replayed (including here, as soon as it’s posted.) Longer term, Newt’s inability to respond respectfully to Bachmann’s haymakers on his record as House speaker reinforces the notion that he has no respect for women, whether or not they are his wives.

I don't think there's a writer -- certainly a blogger -- who didn't read him and marvel at his amazing skill both with words and opinion. It had nothing to do with whether or not you agreed with him; it was his ability to find exactly the right thing to say and the way to say it. The only other writer who came close was Molly Ivins, and we lost her way too early as well.
